Osteopathy: What is it?

Let’s shed some light on a fascinating field called Manual Osteopathy.

Osteopathy is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. It emphasizes the importance of the musculoskeletal system and its impact on overall health.  Unlike traditional medicine, osteopathy treats the body as a whole, considering the interconnectedness of different systems. Osteopaths believe that when the body is properly aligned and balanced, it can function optimally and heal more effectively.

Osteopaths use a variety of techniques, including gentle manipulation, stretching, and massage, to restore balance, alleviate pain, and promote wellness.

Here are specific techniques they use for common conditions such as upper back pain, lower back pain and shoulder dysfunctions.

Muscle energy

Muscle energy techniques address somatic dysfunction through muscle contraction and relaxing. This helps to improve the flexibility of the muscles and usually the range of motion in the joint the muscles are surrounding.

High-velocity, low-amplitude

High velocity, low amplitude (HVLA) is a technique which employs a rapid, targeted, therapeutic force of brief resulting in a joint manipulation like what a chiropractor would do.

Myofascial release

achieving a release of myofascial tissues, accomplished by relaxing contracted muscles, increasing circulation and lymphatic drainage, and stimulating the stretch reflex of muscles and overlying fascia.

Practitioners who perform myofascial release consider the fascia and its corresponding muscle to be the main targets of their procedure. Fascia is the soft tissue component of the connective tissue that provides support and protection for most structures within the human body, including muscle.

Lymphatic pump treatment

Massaging and mobilizing the tissue in a certain way towards the surrounding lymph nodes to drain excess lymph in the tissue.

Osteopaths work closely with patients, taking into account their unique medical history and lifestyle factors.

This approach can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, such as back and neck pain, joint problems, sports injuries, and even digestive or respiratory issues. At MechPhysio, the osteopaths incorporate the Mckenzie Method approach with their expertise to provide an exceptional physical health treatment.
